The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a requirement that airlines replace a fuel shut off valve component used during refusing operations according to procedures set out in a June 2020 bulletin issued by Boeing. Refueling operators have found that the automatic shutoff value does not work correctly and fails to activate a warning light on the refueling panel.
The proposed airworthiness directive involving the Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft was issued in April 2, 2021 by the FAA. According to the AD, the flashing threshold in the [fuel quantity processor unit] not being set at the correct fuel level.”
There are roughly 100 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft in service in the United States flown by Southwest, American and United. European regulators long with Brazilian and Japanese regulators said they are closing looking at the issue and will conduct their own investigations to determine what course of action to take. Prior to the quality control drama that engulf Boeing over the 737 Max program, international regulators normally just copied and rubber stamped any Boeing recommendations and bulletins.
