Boat Capsizes Off San Diego Killing 3 and Hospitalizing 27 More

According the U.S. Coast Guard and the San Diego Lifeguard Service, a boat capsized just off Point Loma in San Diego yesterday, three people were killed and a further 27 had to be hospitalized.  Coast Guard officials say while the call started out as a small craft with a few occupants, once the first rescuers arrived on the scene on jet skis and small boats it became clear this was much larger tragedy as bodies were washing ashore.  Besides the three who died and the 27 hospitalized, another 22 made it to the shore on their own.  The Coast Guard said this is a case of human smuggling.

The capsized boat was a 40-foot cabin cruiser that was apparently stuff full of illegal migrants being taken to the U.S. illegally by human smugglers.  “We haven’t confirmed their nationality” sand Jeff Stephenson of the U.S. Boarder Patrol.  Agents say they believe they have the boat captain and human smuggler in custody at a nearby hospital.

The U.S. Coast Guard, San Diego Lifeguard Service, and San Diego Fire Department all responded along with multiple good Samaritans.
