The Co-chair’s of the massive $50 billion Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced they are getting a divorce but have committed to continue to work together at the foundation that bears their name. They both tweeted at the same time that they would “continue our work together at the foundation. But we no loner believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”
News of yesterday’s announcement had many in the charity world both sad and shocked. Bill founded and lead Microsoft for decades as he earned his fortune and met his wife at the company, as she was an early employee. In Melinda’s tweet, she added her maiden name, Melinda French Gates.
The Foundation said “they will continue to work together to shape and approve foundation strategies, advocate for the foundation’s issues, and set the organization’s overall direction.”
