12 Story Condo Building Collapses In Surfside, Florida, At Least One Dead With More Expected

Early Thursday morning a 12-story residential condo building partially collapsed in Surfside, Florida, which is located on the same barrier island as Miami Beach.  According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, so far one person has been confirmed dead and more are possible as rescuers continue to search and pull survivors from the rubble.  MDFR said 80 units have responded and at least nine people who have been rescued have been sent to the emergency rooms of nearby hospitals.  Authorities have set up a family reunification center at 9301 Collins Ave.  The collapsed building is located at 8777 Collins Ave. and was built in 1981.

According to nearby residents of the community, there was a large blast which is believed to be the cause of the collapse but police have not said what the actual cause was that brought down the back half of the 12-story building.  Clouds of debris traveled for several blocks coating cars parked outside and dimming the street lights nearby.

Rescue workers have been going through the rubble and every floor of the remaining parts of the building that remains standing searching for victims.  Images from the scene show bunk beds, sofa’s and toys at the edge of where the building didn’t collapse.  According to the Wall Street Journal, the collapsed building is one block away from where Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner are leasing a condominium until their mansion on a private island being built is completed.
