Two firefighters were also killed while attempting to rescue people from the roof of a house. According to German rescue services, many more people are also waiting to be rescued on top of their roofs.
Germany’s largest power distribution company Westnetz said around 200,000 homes were without electricity on Thursday as a result of the widespread flooding. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was “shocked” at the chaotic scenes in the flooded areas. “To the many tireless helpers and emergency workers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she said.
