The Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans is urging catholics not to take the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine for Covid 19 saying the vaccine was “morally compromised”.  A statement read, "The archdiocese must instruct Catholics that the latest vaccine from Janssen/Johnson & Johnson is morally compromised as it uses the abortion-derived cell line in development and production of the vaccine as well as the testing”.  The Archdiocese went on to advise Catholics to take the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine if possible.

According to the Catholic Church, the J&J vaccine is developed from stem cells obtained from two abortions.  On the J&J website a statement reads “As a research tool, human pluripotent stem cells promise to expand our understanding of normal physiologic processes such as cell growth and differentiation, and to enable new insights into disease, which may lead to new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide variety of disorders”.

J&J’s vaccine became the third vaccine in the United States to receive emergency use authorization to combat the Covid-19 virus that has caused a global pandemic and killed over 500,000 people in the United States alone.
