Customs and Border Protection agents discovered 217 pounds of methamphetamine disguised and wrapped as pickles hiding among a semi-truck load of fresh cucumber pickles at the Pharr International Bridge crossing in Pharr, Texas. “This substantial quantity of hard narcotics will not make its final destination in the United States,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez. “This interdiction reinforces our officers’ role in advancing CBP’s border security missions by preventing dangerous drugs from entering and negatively impacting our communities.”
In total there were 114 individually wrapped packages hidden amongst the cucumber pickle shipment. The truck and the drugs were seized while the case remained under investigation. In previous drug seizure cases, the driver often walks free because prosecutors have trouble deciding and proving if the driver knew and was part of the smuggling operation.
